Gemma Driskell (she/they) based between Surrey and Bournemouth, Dorset, United Kingdom.
Collecting a distinction grade in Art and Design at Foundation Diploma level from Reigate School of Art, Gemma has continued to Arts university Bournemouth where she is currently studying (BA) hons Fine Art, graduating in 2024.
A main area of focus in her practice has always been about connection as a wider context; specifically exploring the narrative between human and natures interactions and how we are supposed to live cohesively as a species and as an ecosystem on this planet we call Earth. Their art is a bridge between these two worlds, inviting you to question where you as the viewer stand on the matter in hopes of inspiring you to partake in the art world and spend more time with nature, as both belong to all.
Gemma is a multi-media based contemporary artist, inspired by the method of chance and recycling waste into sculpture mixed with drawing and digital art. Gemma's signature mediums consist of ink, charcoal and weaving, specifically with strips of paper. These intricate sculptures are a result of an accident and have since become a staple in Gemma’s practice with different styles recurring whenever chance insists. Artists inspiring their practice include the works of Lousie Bourgeoise and Andy Goldsworthy as one speaks volumes of the female experience and the other the temporary state of all things natural. Gemma explores whether these worldwide issues of inequality and climate crisis can be brought on the same level of understanding.
In December 2022 her woven sculpture ‘A Trace of Life’ exhibited in shared exhibition ‘Cabinet of curiosity's’ at the Bournemouth Natural Science Society Museum. Strips of tracing paper manipulated into the shape of a silkworm's cocoon, suspended by fishing wire below the lantern glass ceiling, commemorate the human history with farming silkworms for silk and an ode to the effort to the single sue habitat. Currently Gemma is working with weaving organic matter and focusing on art that leaves no trace and inspires repurposing even waste matter.
