Summer Project

I wasn't sure where to start for my summer project so I thought the easiest way to start creating would be through a familiar medium; Film analysis. I used to study film studies at A level and it was my favourite subject. I incorporated my methods to analyse films from the recommended film list we we were given as prompts and come up with a list of my thoughts and critics.

I chose 'Blue Velvet' (1986) directed by David Lynch as my first film to study as I was already familiar with the opening scene from my Film Studies Course. This sequence was so persistent I had to watch it.

'Blue Velvet' turned out to not be as surreal and non-linear ass I had expected. I felt the narrative was linear but still lacked the closure I had hoped for. I feel sorry for the actress Isabella Rosellini. I felt the writer and director David Lynch were a bit harsh for putting the actress through such a tormenting performance to leave her character with the ending of a side character, leaving her to fend for herself and her son as the story becomes all about Jeffrey and his less needing love interest.

I can understand that this is usually the preferred reading of surrealist film and art. It/s intention is often to disturb and distress their views with themes such as graphicness and confusion.

I moved on from focusing on the film and how I could create something other than analysis in response to watching this film. Another skill I was familiar with was painting. I searched for images and recurring themes in the film a created this mood board to combine them into one.
